Spring Break Cruise Travel Diary

Miami fashion blogger Stephanie Pernas on the Carnival Victory

We had so much fun on our cruise last week! So, just a little background, last week, I hopped on the Carnival Victory with two of my younger sisters, Kristen and Kaitlyn, as well as Kaitlyn’s best friend for a little spring break trip. The 5-day cruise went to Key West and Cozumel and we also spent a day at sea. I LOVE cruises. Cruises are probably my favorite type of vacation. In fact, I’m already eyeing up the Ocean Spray catamaran with Voyagers with great interest after finding out about it on this cruise! On cruises, everything is taken care of, you don’t have to worry about anything but being entertained. I love that you spend all day in a bikini and then get dressed up every night. There are always loads of fun activities and you get to visit a lot of different places. And, best of all, most fly and cruise holidays come at an affordable price.

Kristen and I had actually been on this exact cruise before and had a blast. We’d done the whole weekend Bahamas cruise a zillion times before, and Kaitlyn really wanted to go to Mexico.

I packed some of my favorite cruise pieces, of course bringing along my favorite Barrington Gifts tote and weekend bag. I also basically rocked the same arm party all day, every day, with every outfit! I love mixing up my arm candy with some tropical vibes!

Day 1: Miami, Florida

The first day, we boarded early, around 11am or so. If you’ve ever been on a cruise, you know the first order of business is basically always lunch on the Lido deck. We headed up for a leisurely lunch before our cabin was ready later in the afternoon. We relaxed on deck the whole afternoon and caught the sunset as we sailed away from Miami towards Key West.

Our first night, we fell into a sort of routine for the rest of the trip: dinner, comedy show, bed. I was exhausted by 12:30 every night so there was definitely no late night partying for us. (Plus, Kaitlyn’s BFF is 17, so. lol)

Day 2: Key West, Florida

Our first full day on the trip, we woke up in Key West, Florida. It obviously doesn’t take a full day to get from Miami to Key West, so we had dropped anchor for a few hours the night before, of course. As I mentioned yesterday in my post, I’d never really been to Key West! Kristen and I had obviously stopped in Key West when we had done this cruise before, but truth be told, we didn’t do anything but hit up CVS for some sunscreen and Tums! Key West is kind of a sleepy little town sometimes, and there really isn’t tons to do. But it is really charming and has an appeal that’s truly unique. We went ashore in the morning, but we had to be back by 1pm so we could head towards Mexico. I wanted to visit the Southernmost Point of the US, or maybe tour the Little White House or Ernest Hemingway’s house, but there really wasn’t time! We just decided to wander around for a bit and (obviously) get a slice of Key West’s famous chocolate covered Key Lime pie! Now… I hate Key Lime pie! Don’t even like it a little bit… but let me tell you… it was DELICIOUS! We went to Kermit’s Key Lime Pie Shoppe for it and even now I find myself thinking about it! It’s really one of those things you absolutely have to try!

All I really wanted in life was to find a pink house to snap a pic in front of, but this pink wall had to do. lol!!

When it was time to head back to the ship, we had to stand in the WORLD’S LONGEST LINE to catch the trolley back! Not even kidding, probably stood in line for almost an hour. The ship docks at a military base, so you have to be trolleyed in and out. In any case, we spent the rest of the day lounging in the adults’ only area on these amazing daybeds! Day 2 was also the formal night on the cruise, so we headed back to get all dolled up for dinner.

Can I just say… I am shocked by what some people think is appropriate to wear when the dress code is stated as formal?? Like… come on. You’re on vacation! You can try at least a little bit! I’ll never understand. I love getting dressed up, in fact, I think we should bring back formal dining every night, like they did in the 1920s lol!

So, the second night of our cruise, something sort of hilarious happened. Well… hilarious, slash scary at first. We passed out at, like, midnight in our cabins and woke up at 2am to this announcement in our room over the loud speaker that there was a “MAN OVERBOARD! MAN OVERBOARD!” Ten minutes later… an announcement to please stop throwing life jackets overboard. (LOL) Then, they made an announcement that everyone needed to go back to their rooms for a head count. We were totally half asleep and in pajamas, but the next two hours, the cabin stewards went around and counted everyone in their rooms, the crew had to report to be counted, and still… no one could figure out what had happened! The cabin steward told me that they had seen something on a security camera go overboard and they assumed it was a person. After counting everyone on the ship, they started making announcements that if anyone had thrown a large object overboard, to let them know. “you’re not in trouble, we just need to know.” (LOL yeah, ok.) Basically, we never found out what happened! Did someone go overboard? Did a something throw a deck chair? We’ll never know, but we did lose 2 hours that night and get to Mexico an hour late!

Off to M-E-X-I-C-O!

Day 3: Cozumel, Mexico

We had booked a zipline/snorkel excursion in Cozumel that was set to leave at 1pm, but because of the night earlier’s excitements, we didn’t arrive in Mexico until 1pm, so we had to dash off the ship to meet our guide! I’ve never ziplined before, so I was a little apprehensive at first, but once we got to the beautiful beach club and we got strapped into our harnesses, I was way more scared that my phone was going to fall out of my pocket than the heights! We did rappelling, zip lining, and a ropes course. It was fun! After spending a few hours on the beachside course, we changed into our bathing suits for some snorkeling. After we were done, it was time to head back to the ship. I had wanted to walk around a bit and check the area out, but truth be told, the area where we docked REALLY wasn’t that nice. Very touristy, and there were zillions of pharmacies around for someone reason! (Like, who is stocking up on Z-packs in Mexico???) I guess people do since you don’t need a prescription, but I definitely thought it was weird lol!

Day 4: At Sea

With nowhere to go, we definitely made use of our time on day 4 and slept in! (Which kind of ended up being a mistake because we missed out on the prime daybeds and got stuck next to where the teens hang lol!) We spent a leisurely day laying out, sipping strawberry daiquiris, and just generally relaxing and enjoying the sun. By the way… I was really worried about sunburn because we were obviously in the sun for days… but the Sun Bum spray sunscreen was amazing! I didn’t burn at all. We made the most of our last day and tried to enjoy our time as much as possible. It’s crazy how fast a cruise flies by… there are so many activities and you’re constantly doing things, it definitely goes by in a flash. I was totally not looking forward to coming home!Miami fashion blogger Stephanie Pernas wearing a Marysia bikini top

Day 5: Back to Miami

Getting back is the actual worst. First of all, you have to be out of your room by 8am, even if you can’t get off the ship until 11. Which was the case for us. We went and had a leisurely breakfast, and then lounged on the deck, waiting for them to call our zone. While I was pretty excited to see the dogs, I was totally not looking forward to getting back to reality! Overall, we had a really nice time on our trip. Tons of time to relax, lots of sun and sleep. I love a cruise! Can’t wait to go on another haha! This week, I’m just slowly trying to transition back to real life and I have to keep reminding myself that, no, I can not get a shrimp cocktail before dinner lol! Ready to start planning my next trip, where should I go???

Thank you so much for reading my cruise travel diary! I hope you enjoyed getting a peek at our trip! Hit the comments and let me know– have you ever been on a cruise? Are you into them? Which is your favorite company?
