2014 SAG Awards Red Carpet Style Roundup

Saturday night’s SAG Awards really snuck up on me! I was so consumed with plans for my best friend’s bridal shower, it came and went and I didn’t even peek at the red carpet.  (Stay tuned to the blog later this week for a peek at the shower!) Last Sunday’s Golden Globes red carpet was chock full of fashion hits and not as many misses- by comparison, I felt like the SAGs were okay; no clear cut all-stars, but a few cringeworthy misses.

A Sparkle Factor

Anna Gunn Anna’s sparkly midnight blue dress fit her like a glove and was cut beautifully! I’m not usually a fan of “matchy-matchy”, but I loved her coordinating statement earrings and gray mani. (Plus: her accessory game was on-point; that custom Breaking Bad clutch is FABULOUS!)

Sofia Vergara in Donna Karan –  Sofia Vergara successfully channeled Old Hollywood in this show-stopping look. She is constantly hitting it out of the park and this dress is no exception.  The beading is elegant and chic, the necklace is a perfect complement, and the soft, retro waves are the perfect touch.

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior –  JLaw really kicked it up a notch after last week’s fashion flop-turned-meme. I absolutely adore her and was so glad she stepped it up with this irridescent strapless gown!  The color is gorgeous and the fit is perfect. I like that she opted to skip a necklace and kept her makeup look a little more toned down than last week. (I wasn’t crazy about the red lip and dark eyes of the Globes!) Obviously, as  a spokesperson for Dior, we will continue to see her in Dior frocks and I only hope they’re all as fabulous as this one.

Claire Danes in Vionnet – My absolute favorite of the night was Claire Danes in Vionnet. I though the dress was a gorgeous color, interesting, dramatic, sparkly. (All of my favorite things!) Her new hair color is fabulous- I love the warmer color on her.

Red and White and Chic All Over

Elisabeth Moss in Michael Kors Choosing a strapless silhouette to highlight her shoulders was a great choice! I love the gathering of the top and the pop of black of the belt. The color is vibrant and the bright lip is a perfect complement.

Hannah Simone in Marchesa – The New Girl star looked flawless and ethereal in Marchesa. I love the flowy, Grecian vibe of the dress and the soft hair and make up .

Renee Bargh  in Steven Khalil– I must confess that I didn’t really know who Renee Bargh was before I spotted this photo! This gorgeous fitted dress with lace overlay caught my eye and I am OBSESSED! The fit is flawless and I love her sleek hair and minimal accessories.

Gretchen Mol in J. Mendel – The overt sexiness of the thigh-high slit is really balanced out by the covered, textured top part of the dress. I love the origami folds of the skirt! (I’m not crazy about her shoes, but perhaps it’s just the angle of the photo.) I’ll give her bonus points because I appreciate a good fashion risk!

SAG Award Red Carpet Misses

Mayik Bialik –  I can tell that Mayim is trying to exude Old Hollywood and elegance, but while stars like Sofia Vergara and Isla Fisher pulled it off at the SAGs, this is really missing the mark. The key to channeling an era without looking costume-y or frumpy is that there has to be a bit of sex appeal. This dress is a bit frumpy and matronly;  both the black overlay and the purple strapless underlay are lovely individually, the two just don’t work together. The black overlay would work if the skirt was a bit sexier; perhaps a tight silhouette, or a shorter, sexier skirt.

Mariah Carey – No ‘Worst Dressed’ list is complete without Mariah. This look is completely wrong for any awards show other than the MTV VMA’s. The sheer panty hose are awful, the weird gloves are awful, the dress is awful. My main problem with Mariah is that she has sartorially continued to stay trapped in the year 2003. This dress is completely out of style and out of place. Ick.

Emma Thompson – I really don’t even understand what is going on here! Where do I even start? The weird hemline, the bad embroidery, the awful, unflattering cut at the shoulders, the flat shoes…! Is she channeling Jafar?

Juliette Lewis – The gathering on the dress is sloppy, it looks like it doesn’t fit her right. In addition to bad fit, the cut, fabric and print of the color are completely wrong for her and way too matronly.

Other Red Carpet Superlatives

Most Disappointing: Kerry WashingtonI really just… don’t understand. Part of me appreciates that she is trying to be adventurous in her maternity style, but while at the Golden Globes she was too matronly, this is too over the top and weird. It’s odd to me that she doesn’t even look pregnant! The effect of this pairing in my opinion is just sloppy and baggy. I really WANT to like what she’s doing, but I just can’t. (Also: I’ve seen a lot of fashion critics rave over this look and part of me feels like it’s the Emperor’s New Clothes; everyone loves that she’s so stylish the rest of the time, they imagine this must be super fashion-forward, when really, it’s not.)

Most Shocking Coming of Age: Abigail Breslin – I had to read the caption to see WHO this was! I thought it was a slimmed down Adele for a second! Abigal Breslin is all grown up! I really did not like the shrug; MATRONLY! She’s so young, way too young for a grandma shrug.

Looks Least Like Their Character: Laura Carmichael –  Lady Edith rocks the red carpet and looks totally amazing! (Honorable Mentions to basically everyone from Game of Thrones, but I pick Laura because she’s SO PRETTY in real life and she looks so frumpy on Downton!)

Best Accessories: Anna Gunn’s Breaking Bad Clutch. Enough said.

So what do you think? Who was your favorite/least favorite?
