2014 Golden Globes Red Carpet Style Roundup

Last night, the 2014 awards season kicked off with our favorite style stars hitting the red carpet to celebrate the Golden Globes. There was some great fashion, gorgeous beauty looks, and major bling all around. Among the trends? A lot of black and white, reds in all shades, and a bevy of pregnant A-listers! Check out some of my favorite fashion hits and my biggest sartorial misses.

Black and White and Chic All Over

Leslie Mann in Dolce & Gabbana– Loved the peplum! I know some are over the trend, but the fit is impeccable, the lace is fabulous, and she looks chic and polished.

Sarah Paulson in Marchesa – I’m obsessed with this romantic look! The sweet straps, tiered lace skirt and tea length totally work for me and her accessories and beauty look coordinate perfectly.

Zoe Saldana in Prabal Gurung – I had mixed feelings about Zoe’s look at first. My immediate reaction was one of confusion; I couldn’t decide if I liked it or hated it! However, the more I looked at it, the more it grew on me. I think she took a risk and I LOVE a good fashion risk! The midi length is refreshing and the embellishments are still very elegant and formal.

Sofia Vergara in Zac Posen – Sofia is a prime example of someone who knows what looks good on her and sticks to it. This dress is absolutely flawless on her. I’m not totally crazy about the necklace; I love a good pop of color and think the shade is a great complement, however, I would have preferred a different texture.

Lady in Red

Julie Bowen in Carolina Herrera – I realize this might be a controversial choice. I loved the mixed textures and colorblocking! It’s a different silhouette and it totally works on her body. I love that she took a fashion risk and wore something different.

Amy Adams in Valentino – Amy sizzled in this super sexy Valentino! Between the subtle colorblocking, the t-strap back and the stunning pendant necklace she paired it with, her look was a real winner! (As was she!)

Taylor Swift in Carolina Herrera – Most of the time, Taylor hits the red carpet either rocking sparkles or shades of red, presumably in honor of her album. She didn’t disappoint at the Globes, opting for a chic, colorblocked Carolina Herrera princess dress. While I loved this dress and thought it was a great choice for her, I’d love to see her take more risks in the future.

Lupita Nyong’o in Ralph Lauren – Calling to mind Gwyneth Paltrow’s Tom Ford cape dress in 2012, Lupita was all anyone could talk about before the show! The vibrant tone of her dress complemented her skin perfectly and her beauty look was fresh and sparkly.

Red Carpet Baby Bumps

Olivia Wilde in Gucci – OBSESSED with this! Olivia Wilde absolutely knocked it out of the park in this Gucci! Dressing around a baby bump can be tricky, Olivia embraced the challenge and the result is stunning.

Drew Barrymore in Monique Lhuillier – Drew was absolutely glowing on the red carpet! The colors of her custom Monique Lhuillier were fresh and feminine, and I loved the high-low hem, coordinating shoes, and luxe embellishments. Her sleek hair and fresh face were perfect complements to the dress. (She wins best beauty look in my book!)

Kerry Washington in Balenciaga – A red carpet super star, I was expecting a stunner from Kerry and was disappointed by this matronly maternity frock. I would have loved to see her in something more fun and feminine.

Elsa Pataky – The gathered pleats of the dress really flattered Elsa’s body while the cut of the top highlighted her amazing arms. Good choice!

Golden Globe Misses

Paula Patton – What was Paula thinking? The white ruffle on one side is just too overwhelming! She looks like she wrapped a blanket around herself and hit the carpet!

Julia Roberts in Dolce & Gabbana – This is no Sharon Stone ‘Gap’ moment! While I loved her hair and beauty look, I thought the dress and layered shirt was a total miss. It reads matronly and manages to be both boring and weird at the same time!

Aubrey Plaza in Oscar de la Renta – The colorblocking is a bit weird and the cut of the dress is just dated; the whole thing comes off like a bad bridesmaid dress.

Hayden Panettiere in Tom Ford – Confused at how a Tom Ford dress manages to get into the worst dressed list, but somehow, it does. The brooch is just weird, the dress is unflattering, and her hair is just wrong.

Who do you think got it right and who do you think missed the mark? Tell me in the comments!

Leslie Mann & Julie Bowen were two of my favorites as well–although my mother HATED Julie Bowen’s colorblocked dress. I’m still unsure how I feel about Aubrey Plaza’s dress, but I did really like her shoes if that counts for anything haha.

And just to let you know, I nominated you for the Liebster award on my blog!

      Wow, Thank you! 🙂
I’m so glad we see eye-to-eye on Julie… I feel like that was a controversial pick, but I love that she did something different and really stood out. I also feel like no one really mentioned Leslie Mann last night! I thought her dress was tasteful and chic.

Aubrey Plaza’s dress… the fit was off, the material wasn’t great, the cut was dated… she’s a cute, young girl, she could totally have done way better!

Okay, you convinced me! haha. After I read what you wrote, I gave Aubrey Plaza’s dress another hard stare. I guess I was just trying to think about the dress being as quirky as she is, but that’s not what it should be doing at all. You’re right, it really does conjure up bad bridesmaid dress vibes, now that I think about it, especially with the material. But her shoes remain cute, from what I can tell 😉

The shoes are totally cute! I’m a sucker for a watercolor printed pump!

SP’s romantic white dress is beautiful! And well I have a weak spot for Hayden P, she’s gorgeous, but the dress really doesn’t suit her!

Have you heard the latest controversy about Hayden? Mainly, that she bought her dress of the rack and kind of implied that Tom Ford had dressed her? Very embarrassing stuff.

The main problem with Hayden is that the style doesn’t suit her body type. She has a stockier build up top, similar to a gymnast’s body… she should stay away from that type of halter style. I think some sort of V or U shaped neckline would be more flattering on her! Glad you loved SP too! Love that dress! (And I’m really attracted to the midi-length… it’s refreshing!)
