Stop Making Excuses & Just Do Things

Inspiration can come to you from some of the strangest places. I participated in a Twitter Chat a few weeks ago, hosted by The Everygirl, Secret Deodorant and career expert, Nicole Williams. The theme of the chat was personal branding, with the underlying theme being ‘Fearless in ’14’. There were some prizes given away, and I won a really cool prize pack filled with cool things like Nicole’s book, ‘Girl on Top’ (which turns dating advice into career advice, and is really pretty fascinating!) a bunch of Secret deodorants (yay!) a cute Kate Spade business card box, and this adorable phone case sold on The Everygirl.

Other than the adorable typography and design, the message really jumped out at me and was just so appropriate. Stop Making Excuses & Just Do Things.

2014 is a big, scary, important year for me. (Well, and for A Sparkle Factor, of course.) Starting a business, launching a blog, and putting myself out there is something I was really nervous about at first. I wanted to do it all for a long time but made excuse after excuse as to why I couldn’t. I made the excuse that I didn’t have time when actually I could make myself free; that I don’t have high-speed internet when I could just contact the isp in my area and get it fixed; that I wanted it to be perfect; I wasn’t ready, and on and on and on…

But finally, I stopped making excuses and just DID IT. Even though I knew it wouldn’t be perfect, I wouldn’t be perfect, I just DID IT. I stopped making excuses and just made it happen. And immediately, I started to get validation that it was the right decision. I am so glad that I stopped being afraid and just started DOING. And it’s not perfect. It’ll never be perfect. It’ll always be a work in progress, and that’s OK! That’s GREAT, in fact! It just means that this will always be an evolution and will never be boring. Businesses are always going to need to improve, especially as they start getting more sales and customers. To make sure your business is offering customers everything they need, it might be worth creating a survey for customers to answer. For help with questions, visit https://www.qualtrics.com/blog/writing-survey-questions/. Surveys can help businesses to gather vital feedback, allowing them to make necessary changes to their business.

We live in a world of excuses. Why we can’t leave that job we hate, why we don’t have the time to pursue our passions, why we can’t follow our hearts. Really, most excuses boil down to two things: being afraid, or not wanting them badly enough. It’s easier to hide behind a flimsy excuse than to put yourself out there and take a chance; than to risk getting hurt, risk being exposed, risk failure and rejection. But with big risk, comes big reward. Success doesn’t come easily. If it did, everyone would be successful. Success takes hard work, blood, sweat and tears. And it won’t always be sunshine and roses. There will be days that it’s awful, and scary and that you’ll be frustrated. But you keep your “eye on the prize” and keep working hard. Keep your goals in mind, keep yourself focused on the positive and how far you’ve come and just adjust. We’ll all make mistakes and fail, sometimes epically. But there’s always a way back on track. I’m a big believer that it’ll always work out. (An eternal optimist!) The only regrets I have are the time I’ve wasted and let slip away. If you love what you’re doing and it’s your passion, chase it. Make things happen! Don’t procrastinate. There will never be a perfect situation or a perfect time. The perfect time is NOW.

If you want something badly enough, you’ll do anything to make it happen. You’ll move heaven and earth and figure out a way. If there’s something you love, really think about why you haven’t pursued it. Think of your reasons and make sure they aren’t excuses. Then, MAKE IT HAPPEN. Find a way. There is one, even if it’s not the way you imagined. Start small and you’ll get there. Stop making excuses & just do things.

Check out the adorable, inspirational cases on The Everygirl. Let’s get personal. Tell me in the comments: is there something you’ve been making an excuse for not pursuing?

I love this post. I think it really hits home because last spring, I’d finally had it with living in my hometown, working blah jobs, and needed more adventure. I quit my jobs, packed up and moved to Germany where I still (after almost 9 months) don’t really have any friends, work a blah job, and don’t do even a third of the travel I’d planned to do. It’s like I used all the oomph I had to get myself overseas and now that I’m here, I need to resupply and recharge before I’m really ready to take on the world !

Thank you for sharing that Signe! That’s so brave of you… I can’t imagine moving to another country! But that was the hardest/scariest part- now that you’re there, take advantage of it! What a great opportunity. x Stephanie
