Today’s red carpet recap is going to be short and sweet. Save for Lena Dunham, I don’t feel like there were any major missteps. (Why was it wrinkled? HOW do you ruin Giambattista? It takes a lot to make something so gorgeous look messy and unkempt…) Reds, whites, and full skirts ruled the night.
My Absolute Favorite Look of the Night…
Sarah Hyland in custom Christian Siriano was by FAR my favorite look of the night. The styling was perfect, it was youthful, fun, elegant, and totally chic. If I were going to prom this year? This would be my outfit, btw. The high bun and make up are prefect complements to the look. Well done!
The Rest of the Best…
Lizzy Caplan in Donna Karan was a big surprise! The colorblocked gown was both modern and elegant. As a nominee, it was truly fitting that she chose such a knockout dress… and she was really the sartorial Cinderella story of the night!
Cat Deeley in Burberry Prorsum. This dress was fabulous! The tie dye, the plunging neckline, the simplicity of the styling… Cat looked amazing and glamorous but not over the top. I enjoyed this look a lot!
Allison Williams in Giambattista Valli. I loved that she went with a princess dress, but it still felt modern. (Key word last night, huh? Modern.) The bow on the bodice was playful without being juvenile. I was really loving this dress on Allison.
Claire Danes in Givenchy. Looks like Kim’s wedding dress, no? It was truly the night of red, but Claire Danes stood out from the crowd. The lace paneling, the necklace, the color, I was into this look. Obviously, I wanted her to go for something more sparkly and dramatic, but there was a quiet power to this dress that i respond to.
Sarah Paulson in Armani Prive. This one is controversial, I know. But I LOVED this dress when I saw it in the Armani Prive show and was hoping someone would wear it! I like that it’s a bit whimsical and fun but also has a lot of drama and is very girly.
Gwen Stefani in Versace. I loved this! It felt futuristic but vintage at the same time; very 70s. She almost looked like Gwyneth for a second, no?
And really…
WHY, LENA, WHY???
I agree with all of this. I like that you pointed out Lizzy Caplan was a nominee because (no offense to non nominees) why wear such a spectacular dress if you’re just there for a good show? I loved Sarah Paulson’s too. It was a risk but at least someone took one! And Lena, I just can’t with her. I feel like she’s trying to piss me off.
Lena just ALWAYS looks SLOPPY. Even her ill-fitting Zac Posen at the Globes was better than this. How do you make couture look cheap? It’s so bizarre. It’s like the atelier sent her this elegant look and she crumbled the shirt into a ball on her bedroom floor. PAINFUL.
