For the past few seasons, we’ve been seeing more and more 90s influence in fashion. To be honest, I balked at first, feeling that the 90s were a total waste of sartorial time. Minus the fashion genius that was the movie Clueless, I never felt all that attached to the style sensibilities of my youth. (Plus, I’m not much of a minimalist…)
But, lately, something has happened to change my tune. Maybe it’s the prominence of stylish minimalists in pop culture, like Olivia Pope and Claire Underwood. I’m not quite sure what it is, but something about 90s minimalism has begun to appeal to me more and more. (Don’t get me wrong, I still strongly gravitate towards tutus and sparkles, but I can occasionally embrace the beauty of a gorgeously cut sheath dress.)
Then, I spotted this amazing dress on NastyGal. First of all, I’m absolutely loving cobalt right now. Secondly, I’m loving that there’s something about this dress that channels Calvin’s 90’s minimalism, reinterpreted for 2014. It’s modern and cool and 100% sexy. (THAT BACK!) While it’s not TRULY a minimalist piece, you can definitely see the influence.
A word about these amazing shoes: I spotted them and was instantly obsessed. There are so many things I love about them, I don’t even know where to begin. Maybe it’s the colorblocking, maybe it’s the mix of animal print and cobalt, maybe it’s the strappy shape. In any case, LOVE them. (Plus, they’d be great with basically anything else from a LBD to a pair of bf jeans.) What do you think? Are you intrigued by minimalism at all?
I would most definitely wear this outfit! I love the back of this dress!
