Today, I’m really excited to be partnering with 3 of my blogger gal pals on a styling challenge: overalls. My job has a lot of amazing perks, but meeting other wonderful and inspiring bloggers has been the best one of all. A month or so back, we were chatting on Twitter during StyleCaster’s StyleChat about “unwearable trends” and how intriguing we find some of them to be. While there were a few that we COULDN’T agree on, like CULOTTES, (I’m lookin’ at you, Rachel Ross!) we came to a general consensus that overalls can be incredibly chic.
I’ve said before how excited I get about “unwearable” trends. I’m generally a glass-half-full kind of girl and I try to always see the best in things. Because of that mentality, I’m always willing to give even the most unforgiving trends a chance. Fashion should be fun. You should take some risks and try new things. Granted, every trend isn’t for everyone. But the truth is, great personal style is all about finding pieces you love and making them your own.
So how do you wear overalls without looking like a toddler? There are a few guidelines to follow to keep the look elevated and grown up.
1. Wear heels. A flat is too frumpy. Opt for a pump or ankle boot to complete the look.
2. Cuff the pant. A cropped length feels modern and now. Plus, you want to show off your shoes!
3. Choose a style with a skinny leg. The new cut for overalls is more tapered and fitted. A looser leg feels dated.
4. Keep the neckline of your top high. The key to styling overalls is choosing the right top. The main thing to keep in mind is to opt for a top that has a higher neckline. Stay away from v or scoop necks. Go for a crewneck, turtleneck, or collared shirt.
5. Don’t be afraid of the bling. You may be a afraid that a statement necklace will be too much… it’s not. Throw a bauble on to add a little polish.
For my look, I went with an easy, white sleeveless high neck tank, my new favorite booties that I can’t stop wearing, and a really fun necklace.
I love how the other girls styled their looks! Diane and Rachel were clearly on the same wavelength, and I LOVE the look of the stripes! Wesley took it in a totally different direction, and I think the result is AWESOME! Love how polished and grown up it looks. Plus, she embraced one of my fave fall trends, oxblood. Check out more from my look below and then make sure to visit my friends! Tell me in the comments: what do you think of overalls?
