Fall Trends with Old Navy: 4 Ways to Wear a Shirtdress

old navy teaser editFINALLY!! Today’s the day! After teasing it the past couple of weeks, I’m SO excited to finally share this super fun collaboration I’ve been working on with Old Navy! Regular readers know that I LOVE Old Navy. It is absolutely one of my favorite brands, so when the opportunity came up to work with them, I was psyched. You may remember my ‘5 Grown Up Ways to Wear a Graphic Tee’ series a couple of months back, where I styled the Old Navy ‘Holy Chic’ tee. (Which, btw? Totally sold out online, but you can hunt it down in-store!) Today, I decided to take on the theme of reinvention again and style this amazing heart print shirtdress 4 different ways to and embrace 4 hot fall trends: classic, mod, sporty, and moto.

While shopping at Old Navy, I fell in love at first sight with the Heart Print Shirtdress. It’s silky, easy, and super flattering. When shopping for shirtdresses, you have to be cognizant of button placement; if the placket is off a half inch, the fit is completely off.  (There’s nothing I hate more than when a shirt’s buttons are placed so that it’s either too buttoned up, or leaves you at risk of a maj wardrobe malfunction!) The button placement on this dress is perfect- just sexy enough! The silky fabric feels luxe yet thin enough for you to style it as a blouse- with no unsightly bulk. Update: By the way- Old Navy is having a MAJOR MAJOR sale. Now through Wednesday, everything is 50% off online and in-stores. GET IT ALL.

1. Classic

Obviously, one of the ways you can wear it as it’s intended- a classic shirtdress. I decided to make it a little more fun and pair it with a fun pop of color- hot pink suede pumps, a matching belt, and this great gauze infinity scarf, belted. (THE hottest way to wear a belt this fall.) You can also wrap it around your neck the usual way, of course. The belt creates a little definition and I kind of LOVED the matchy-matchy element.

2. Moto

Moto Jacket (sold out online, still available in-store) | Heart Print Shirtdress | Leopard Jacquard Skirt

The moto trend is definitely major this season, and you can’t do moto without a fab moto jacket. Old Navy’s is AWESOME- vegan leather, and the cut is a bit boxy, yet still flattering. The moto jacket is my absolute favorite fall trend- if you can only buy ONE fall piece, I always recommend scooping up a moto jacket. They’re so versatile- pair them with jeans, a little dress, a skirt, you name it. The leopard jacquard skirt is one of Old Navy’s online-exclusives. It’s a great piece, I love the subtle sheen… and even if you’re wearing mostly black, it adds a bit of texture and interest to the look. (HOW amaze would it be paired with an oversized sweater and some black tights?) For the top, I just tucked the dress into the skirt to fake a blouse! I love the look of the print with the leopard jacquard and leather- the mix of textures gives the outfit some interest. Obviously, the other major way to get the moto look is with a pair of ankle boots! Sadly, the Old Navy moto boots didn’t fit me, so I had to improvise… but I definitely recommend trying them on and scooping up a pair if they fit!

3. Mod

Old Navy ModQuilted Vest (sold out online, still available in-store) | Heart Print Shirtdress | Polka Dot Pixie Pant | Hot Pink Suede Pumps

This look is my favorite and the look that inspired this series. I wrote a post awhile back about the Pixie pant and how great it is… the fit is really flattering, the fabric makes you look 5lbs skinnier, and the length is perfect, even for a shorty like me. (I’m just shy of 5’2!) I immediately wanted to mix the polka dot print with the heart shirtdress. The secret to a good print mix is color; make sure that your two prints are in the same color family. If it’s black and white? You’re golden. I loved the idea of adding this lightweight vest, just for a third layer, and the heels for a little POC.

4. Sporty

The last trend I decided to tackle was sporty. The sporty trend is major this season. I love the idea of taking something sporty and interpreting it in a girly way. So the way I do sporty? A flirty little skirt, the quilted vest again, and a pair of fun little bright sneakers! I’m so obsessed with the look of a pair of canvas sneaks with a skirt or dress- it’s so modern and unexpected. This look would also be fab with a pair of slip ons! The quilted leathers would be super cute with it!

So that’s my take on the trends, and 4 ways to style this shirtdress! Tell me in the comments: What do you think? Which look was your fave?
