Last night’s SAG Awards once again brought out some of our favorite style stars to fete the best in movies and television. As with the recent Golden Globes, I didn’t really feel like there were any MAJOR misses on the red carpet; mainly, I felt like there were a few disappointments, and a lot of good or okay style. I chose once again to highlight my absolute FAVORITES and point out my main disappointments.
Best Dressed
Keira Knightley in Erdem: After a majorly disappointing Golden Globes red carpet appearance, I was thrilled to see Keira hit the SAG Awards in this beautiful eggplant colored Erdem. While the Chanel she wore to the Globes was matronly and odd, the layered lace and mesh Erdem gown from the SAG Awards was beautiful, sexy, and unique. I loved the lace detail and HONORABLE MENTION to the BEST accessory of the night: her stunning, stunning earcuff. The hair and makeup were perfect complements! I love that Hollywood’s stylish mommy-to-bes have really raised the bar on maternity style! When news broke of Keira’s pregnancy, all eyes really turned to her to see what her pregnancy style would be like, and she’s made some really great choices. Excited to see more!
Joanna Froggatt in Honor: This dress was absolutely stunning on the Downton Abbey actress! It was tailored to perfection and fit her like a glove. I’ve long been a fan of Honor, and love that they got some red carpet love at the SAG Awards. Her jewels and sleek, sideswept hair really lent a touch of Old Hollywood glamour to the look, and the red on the clutch was a perfect pop of color.
Julie Bowen in Georges Hobeika:I loved this choice on Julie. She always hits the carpet in something beautiful and elegant, and this beautiful dress was no exception. The intricate embellishments were elegant and feminine and I loved the girly, delicate bow. The color suited her skin tone and I felt like it was a very beautiful choice.
Maisie Williams: In recent years, teenage starlets like Kiernan Shipka and Hailee Steinfeld have set great examples on how to be stylish and young in Hollywood. Maisie Williams’ look at the SAG Awards was yet another example of a young actress hitting a fashion homerun while keeping it age appropriate. We’re so used to seeing Maisie as 13-year-old Arya Stark, that it may be a jarring a shock (as it was to me!) to know that she’s 17! She chose a great look. I loved the whimsy of the dress; its silhouette, color, the lace… it felt sexy but tasteful and perfect for a teenage girl. The styling was cool and modern, and I loved the gold pump.
Sophie Turner: The OTHER Stark sister, Sophie Turner, made a really beautiful choice as well. I liked the fun silhouette, modern cutouts, and the whimsical little bow. I mainly chose this look because I am OBSESSED with the shoes and thought that the look was so girly and fun for the red carpet. I love a shoe with some personality!
Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting in Romona Keveza: The color of this red Romona Keveza was just stunning! So vibrant and rich, it photographed beautifully and fit her to perfection. Loved the bow detail! (Three times is a trend…!) The look was clean but pretty and modern.
Julianne Moore in Givenchy Couture: This was one of my favorite looks! The emerald color is so perfect with her hair! I loved the sequin and how the dress transitioned from sequin into chiffon at the bottom… so unique! I really liked her earrings as well and the styling was perfect.
Juliana Margulies in Giambattista Valli: My second favorite look of the night! I loved the cut, the color, the slit front, the styling… everything about this look! Juliana usually shows up on all of the standard awards show best dressed lists, but I never quite love her looks enough to include her in mine. Last night, this changed and I’m really excited about the choice she made!
Sarah Hyland in Vera Wang: Sarah Hyland has proven to be a constant red carpet favorite of mine… I still can’t stop thinking about her look from the 2014 Emmy’s. (Will ALWAYS be one of my all-time favorite looks, EVER!) This Vera Wang was really unique and beautiful, elegant, special, and a total homerun for me.
Emma Stone in Dior: All hail Emma Stone! Her name just BELONGS on the best dressed list. She always looks amazing on the red carpet, she always takes major risks and isn’t afraid to have fun with fashion. This Dior was fabulous and dramatic. (so dramatic that Naomi Watts tripped over it onstage!) I loved that it was daring, elegant and fun. She is a true style star.
Rosamund Pike in Dior: This one is controversial. But it’s my #1 FAVORITE LOOK OF THE NIGHT! I loved this! It was different, unique, intricate… so much drama. I loved the silhouette, the texture, the styling… after a disappointing Golden Globes look, I was thrilled with this choice.
Disappointing Looks
Emilia Clarke: I was really, really disappointed by this look. Mostly, I felt that the dress was too matronly for her. It would’ve looked great on someone like Helen Mirren or Meryl Streep, but for someone as young as Emilia, the dress is just a miss. Plus: she wore a style similar to Felicity Jones, who actually looked fabulous in her version.
Kelly MacDonald: This was just snoozeville. The length was wrong, the color boring, and it kind of just felt like a dress you’d wear to a cocktail party. She could’ve done way better than this.
Gwendoline Christie: Honestly, for a minute, I couldn’t figure out who she was. And then it hit me! BRIENNE FROM GAME OF THRONES! It’s amazing how different the GoT cast looks off-set, no? So, this dress. I didn’t like the draping, the peplum effect, the fit, and I’ve never been partial to a shiny red satin. It just feels dated and the dress looks wrinkled. A miss for me.
Taryn Manning: I felt like there were a lot of problems with Taryn’s dress. The color was a bit off and didn’t really flatter her skintone. The dress itself wasn’t particularly flattering in terms of shape… it didn’t really do her any favors! All the darts felt a little weird and I definitely didn’t like all of the weird action going on by her shoulders. It felt like a lot was covered up, but not in a good way.
Julia Roberts: Yet another miss, for me, from Julia. I heard a lot of people saying they liked her look and enjoyed that she did a suit instead of a dress, but I didn’t feel like this particular suit was a great one. It felt more like a jumpsuit, I would’ve preferred something more classic looking and a different shoe, definitely.
Tell me in the comments: who was your favorite and who disappointed you? Do you agree with my choices?
